Markdown Annotate is a WYSIWYG Markdown editor for iPhone and iPad with colour highlights and notes. The app opens with a Welcome page that walks through its features.
Getting started
- Your own notes: in the Files pane, tap the folder name at the top, then Open a folder…, and choose a folder in iCloud Drive or another app.
- Highlighting: select text and tap a colour. Tap a highlight to change its colour, add a note, or delete it. While typing, tap Highlight in the formatting bar instead.
- Reading mode: the pencil button switches between editing and reading, where taps don't bring up the keyboard.
- Link previews: long-press a link to another note or a section to preview it.
Common questions
Where are my highlights saved?
By default, in the app. In Settings you can keep them in a <file>.md.annotations.json next to each file instead, or write them into the file as <mark> tags that other Markdown apps show.
Will editing reformat my files?
No. Only the paragraphs or blocks you change are rewritten; the rest of the file stays exactly as it was.
Why is Git diff unavailable?
The file must be in a git repository (a folder with a .git folder) inside the folder you opened.
Do highlights carry over from VS Code?
Yes. The app uses the same formats as the Markdown Annotate extension for VS Code. Set both to keep highlights beside the file, or write them into it, and share the folder through iCloud Drive or git.
